Of course, he keeps pitching; he’s Bob Gibson!

Bob Gibson suffers a fractured right fibula 56 years ago tonight when he is struck in the leg by a line drive from Pittsburgh’s Roberto Clemente in the fourth inning of a 6-4 loss to the Pirates in St. Louis.

Gibson being Gibson, and that would be tenacious, he faces three more batters – Willie Stargell, Bill Mazeroski and Donn Clendenon – before relenting and leaving the game.

He does not pitch again until after Labor Day. Just in time to lead the Cardinals into the World Series, where Gibson is named the MVP after winning all three of his starts against the Boston Red Sox.
